Design Features
- Solid and stable construction
- All components in working order
- Meets Australian Standards (latest standard was published in 2003)
- Cots older than 7 years may meet latest standards
- Only use close fitting mattress (see cot manufacturer's recommendation stamped on the cot's mattress base)
Hazards to be aware of
- Falls: (minimum distance from mattress to top rail should be 500mm)
- Entrapment: (Unsafe gaps are between 5-12mm [finger]; limb entrapment between 30-50mm; and above 90mm is a head entrapment and fall through hazard)
- Strangulation: No protrusions or snags (not more than 5mm)
- Suffocation: Mattress firm and not capable of forming indentations
Environment
- Not to be used close to blind/curtain cords
- No bumpers
- No pillows, as they can create suffocation hazard
- No doonas
- Mobiles not to be used when children move about
- No mosquito nets that can be accessed by child within the cot
