Cradles & Bassinets
Design Features
- If using a rocking cradle, a locking mechanism to stop child rolling into corner
- Breathablity zones of at least 100cm around mattress base to avoid suffocation (zones to be made of mesh or similar to allow air flow)
- Firm close fitting mattress
- Bassinet on solid and stable frame to avoid toppling
Hazards to be aware of
- Possible suffocation if no breathability zones
- Mattress must be firm to avoid indentations and trapping of air
- If a rocking cradle, infant can become trapped if they roll
- Must be stable to avoid bassinet being accidentally knocked over
Environment
- Ensure bassinet has air circulation
- Avoid placing where will be knocked over
- Always use firm and correct fitting mattress ((see cot manufacturer's recommendation stamped on the cot's mattress base)
